49ers agree to terms with Manningham

WR Mario Manningham, one of the stars of the Giants' Super Bowl victory, has signed a two-year contract with the 49ers. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed to The Associated Press that Manningham is now a 49er.

Manningham had visited the Rams on Saturday, and the Dolphins also reportedly were interested in him. PFW ranked him as the 34th-best free agent on the market this offseason.

The former Giant will join Michael Crabtree and the recently signed Randy Moss as the Niners' top three wide receivers, alongside TE Vernon Davis.

Manningham had 39 catches for 523 yards and four touchdowns in 12 regular-season games last season, but in the postseason he stepped up with 13 receptions for 189 yards and three TDs in four games. He made key catches in the NFC championship game and Super Bowl XLVI, including his over-the-shoulder, 38-yard catch along the left sideline on the Giants' game-winning drive.

"It's going down. Mario Manningham signs with 49ers. This is a sick WR squad. It's going to be crazy on the Offensive side of the ball," tweeted Niners DL Ricky Jean Francois.

The way we see it

The 49ers have upgraded their WR corps in free agency, but the ultimate effectiveness of the group is likely to hinge on how well Moss plays in his return to the NFL after sitting out a season. Another key part of the equation is the person will be throwing the passes to this group of receivers. The team has not re-signed its starter from last season, Alex Smith, as yet, and it has been pursuing Peyton Manning as a better option. Stay tuned.
