49ers acquire WR Boldin from Ravens

Not to be outdone by the rival Seahawks, who sent three draft picks, including a first-rounder in 2013, to the Vikings for WR Percy Harvin on Monday, the 49ers acquired veteran WR Anquan Boldin from the Ravens in exchange for a sixth-round pick, the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson first reported.

Boldin, 32, wasn't interested in offering the Ravens cap relief by taking a pay cut, so Baltimore sent him and his $6 million 2013 salary to San Francisco, which had plenty of trade ammunition after picking up a pair of picks from Kansas City in the Alex Smith blockbuster trade last week.

Boldin, a 10-year veteran, enjoyed his best season in a Ravens uniform in 2012, grabbing 65 passes for 921 yards and four TDs. He was also the most dominant wideout in the postseason, with 22 receptions for 380 yards and four TDs en route to Baltimore's 34-31 victory over the Niners in Super Bowl XLVII.

The way we see it

The arrival of Boldin gives Colin Kaepernick yet another weapon at his disposal, one that is extremely productive in the intermediate passing game and, more importantly, in the red zone, where San Francisco's Super Bowl bid fell just short last month.

Although Boldin will be 33 by the midway point of the 2013 season, few wideouts in the league can match his physicality and competitiveness with the ball in the air. The Niners still lack a proven deep threat who can stress defenses outside the numbers, but this was a shrewd move that could pay big dividends - particularly when considering the significant price the Seahawks paid (2013 first- and seventh-rounders, 2014 conditional) to add Harvin, an immensely talented but diva wideout with durability concerns.
