Three-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor is pregnant.
The 36-year-old Olympian said in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday that she and her husband, ballplayer Matt Treanor, are expecting their first child in the summer.
''Matt and I are overjoyed and excited about the journey before us,'' she said. ''We have been wanting to start our family and we feel blessed to finally have this little miracle happen.''
May-Treanor announced her retirement and plans to start a family last summer after winning her third Olympic gold medal with Kerri Walsh Jennings at the London Olympics. She has been coaching in California.
Treanor, a catcher, has played nine seasons in the major leagues but did not have a team in 2013.
''Matt is focused on getting back out on the field as he is healthy and has been back to baseball workouts, so we are trying to now get everything ready for the new addition ahead of time,'' May-Treanor told the AP.
Walsh Jennings, who has three children, is aiming for a fourth straight Olympic beach volleyball gold medal with new partner April Ross.
