3 Quick Tips for Hiking Mount Washington

Mount Washington, located in the White Mountain National Forest, is the highest point in the northeast. Every year thousands of people visit the celebrated mountain. Most visitors use the Cog Railway or the Mount Washington Auto Road. But true outdoor enthusiasts like me tend to challenge themselves by hiking the voluminous mountain. Standing at over 6,000 feet above sea level, Mount Washington is an exhaustive yet satisfying excursion for those men and women who can accomplish the feat. It's complicated, but it is certainly achievable. If you envision on trying your hand at hiking Mount Washington this season, here are three quick tips you should remember.

    Hike with a Friend

If you are looking for a stretch of peace and tranquility, elect another hiking trail. Over 100 people have died on the mountain since 1849. Roaming alone, especially on such a treacherous mountain, increases your risk of injury.. People tend to think that because of its popularity it is universally harmless. But that is a false perception. Hiking Mount Washington is hazardous and all precautions should be amassed. Hike with a friend, it could save your life.

    Pack Extra Clothes

I will admit it, I am guilty of packing light when I go hiking. And in truth, it is cockiness and ignorance that enables me to do this. But I've learned several times that weather can alter in the blink of an eye. Luckily, these weather changes have occurred on smaller mountains and I've been able to turn around and not risk hypothermia. Mount Washington is renowned for its changing weather patterns. The instability leaves a lot of tourists turning back half way through their trip. Be smart. Pack a loose fitting sweater and rain jacket. The diminutive extra weight in your backpack will be worth not having to turn around like everybody else.

    Take Your Time

Every time I take one of my inexperienced amigos on a walking safari, their exuberance always exceeds their aptitude. At the beginning of the hike they exert so much energy that by the time we reach the half way point, they have exhausted themselves. Experienced hikers know that walking the trail is not about making good time, but it's about going slow and admiring the view. Do not hasten the journey. Take many recesses along the way, and drink plenty of water. This will ensure that your trip up Mount Washington is a gratifying one.

Hiking Mount Washington can be an incredible journey filled with surprises and serenity. But it doesn't come without arduous labor and a keen sense of safety. Follow these precautions to guarantee your trip through the wild woods of New Hampshire is safe and prosperous.
