2017 Raiders Draft Profile: RB Samaje Perine

2017 Raiders Draft Profile

Name: Samaje Perine

Position: RB

School: Oklahoma

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 237 pounds

Stats: 685 carries, 4122 yards (6.0 avg.), 49 TD, 40 receptions, 321 yards (8 avg), 2TD

Running Style: The first thing to remember is Perine runs exactly how he looks. Imagine a truck with no brakes barreling toward you. That is how he attacks the line of scrimmage. Perine runs with violent vision. As a result, there is little elusiveness or flash to his game. On the other hand, what exists is pure, unadulterated power. Perine’s entire torso is a weapon. That is to say, defenders can’t draw a bead or tackle him with much force. Perine stands roughly 5’10, that isn’t what bothers opponents. At the same time, his low center of gravity allows him to bounce off opponents.

Agility: For all of Perine’s abundant physicality, his speed is average at best. Yet, that isn’t why teams are drooling over the selecting him. Perine runs fast in a straight line, using minimal hip movement and choppy strides. His feet and stride length helps to change direction and build up speed. Consequently, he will not run away from defenders too often.

Motivation: As a freshman, Perine set the NCAA FBS single-game rushing effort. Over the next two seasons, splitting time with another talented back diminished his carries. Yet, Perine never whined, complained or threatened to transfer. General Managers regard Perine as humble and the ultimate team player.

AROUND COVER32

Decision Time: What should the Vikings do with AP?

Predictions:: Way too early 2017 NFL predictions

NFL Draft:: The five most polarizing prospects in this year’s draft class

Aggression: To begin with, Perine looks for contact by finding anyone wearing an opposing jersey and knocking them to the turf. Film shows a healthy respect for opponents, but a flagrant disrespect for weak tackle attempt. Consequently, if defender don’t wrap up, Perine’s immense strength powers through. For this reason, Perine will gain those hard yards. Plus, in the open field, Perine a stiff arm that resembles more of a stiff jab to stun opponents.

Raiders Fit: As mentioned, Latavius Murray is not scheduled to return to Oakland, preferring to pursue free agency. Right now, Perine is a more powerful back than Murray. Although improving in 2016, Murray will occasionally run too high or dance in the hole. Perine used brute force to get to the second level. On the positive side, the Raiders could find Perine on the second day of the draft.
