Look, I get it. The 2017 NFL Draft is almost a year away, but that has not stopped some from already coming out with way too earl mock drafts. And Todd McShay of ESPN has done just that. And he thinks the Colts will be going back to the defensive side of the ball with their first round pick next year.
The Colts loaded up last week on the offensive line when they took four of their eight picks to hopefully help Andrew Luck stay on his feet. However, the Colts are still in major need or pass rushers. Trent Cole and Robert Mathis are on the wrong side of their career, and outside of Kendall Langford the Colts do not really have a major threat to get after the quarterback.

Defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway might be a help, and a healthy Henry Anderson will be a major boost for that. But, the Colts still need that dynamic outside linebacker for their 3-4 scheme. And that is exactly what Todd McShay has the Colts doing with the 13th overall pick in next year’s draft.
And the pick is…..
Darek Barnett out of Tennessee. Barnett had 10 sacks last season for the Vols at defensive end while make second All-SEC team honors, and likely will make the transition to outside linebacker in the NFL. His 6’3″ 257 pound frame shows that he has the size. Just watch some of his highlights below.
However I am still skeptical on the Colts getting a pick that high in the draft. Those positions were based on Football Outsiders projections for the 2016 season. According to that, the Colts would finish 3rd in the division behind the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans.
That is something to ponder on. A healthy Andrew Luck has masked a lot of the teams flaws over the last four years, but when he went down last year the Colts still managed to stagger to a 8-8 record. Factor in healthy Luck with a revamped offensive line next year and the Colts still should be the division favorite in 2016.
We will just have to wait an see.
