2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen No Longer a Jetta-Setter
When the original Volkswagen Jetta was introduced to the U.S. new-vehicle market, it was a Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit, at the time) equipped with a trunk and a different name. The current Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has followed a similar theme, but that changes with the debut of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Concept at the 2014 New York International Auto Show.
Volkswagen says the Golf SportWagen shown in New York is a concept vehicle, but what you see here is essentially the redesigned 2015 Golf SportWagen. Lighter but larger than the Jetta SportWagen it replaces and equipped with as much cargo space as compact SUVs according to Volkswagen, the Golf SportWagen is built on the same platform as the new 2015 Audi A3, 2015 Volkswagen Golf, and 2015 Volkswagen GTI models.
Aerodynamic improvements contribute to greater gas mileage compared with the outgoing car, as does the new standard 1.8-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It makes 170 horsepower, is paired with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, and boasts a claimed 17% bump in fuel economy compared with the old 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine that was standard in the Jetta SportWagen.
As an option, a 2.0-liter, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine is installed in the 2015 Golf SportWagen TDI Clean Diesel model, providing 150 horsepower to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox or a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), the latter an automated manual transmission without a clutch. This engine is installed in the 2015 Golf SportWagen debuting in New York, and what makes this a concept car is its 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. Volkswagen has told industry reporters that 4Motion is a possibility for the new Golf SportWagen, but a decision about whether or not it will be available hasn't been made.
Volkswagen also says that when compared with the Jetta SportWagen, the new Golf SportWagen provides greater rear-seat legroom and shoulder room, more headroom for front and rear-seat occupants, and a lower load height when accessing a cargo area that is 10% larger than before. A partial list of available equipment includes a 12-way power driver's seat, panoramic sunroof, and automatic climate control, along with exterior upgrades including bi-xenon headlights, LED running lights, an advanced front-lighting system, park-assist sensors, and the 18-in. aluminum wheels worn by the New York Auto Show concept car.
Another new feature that Volkswagen introduces with the Golf SportWagen is called Automatic Post Collision Braking. This system automatically engages the brakes following a collision in order to bring the car to a rapid halt and avoid secondary collisions, if possible. The brakes release if the driver accelerates, so that the Golf SportWagen can be safely moved out of traffic following a crash.
Volkswagen says the new 2015 Golf SportWagen will go on sale during the first quarter of 2015.
