2013 Week 5 MLS Power Rankings

Yahoo Contributor Network

The biggest stories of the 2013 Major League Soccer season continue to be the top-of-the-table teams that have come out of nowhere. RBNY reminded everybody that they have quite a bit of talent in their squad, Houston remained unbeatable at home, and the league's only perfect side is perfect no more. Don't look now, but the Galaxy are finding their form much earlier than they did in 2012; when they won their second straight MLS Cup.

2013 Week 5 MLS power rankings

19. Chicago Fire (0-3-1): Hey, Chicago didn't lose in the final weekend of March, Sure, they didn't play, but it's baby steps right now for the worst team in MLS.

18. Seattle Sounders (0-3-1): It's time to start asking questions about Seattle's back line. Without goalkeeper Michael Gspurning making multiple noteworthy stops, the Sounders would have been routed at RSL.

17. Colorado Rapids (0-3-2): Great teams close opponents out, especially when up by two at home. The Rapids aren't yet great, but the pieces are there. They will be a hard out for top MLS sides throughout 2013.

16. New England Revolution (1-2-1): Sometimes, stats really don't lie. The Revs just aren't scoring in the early stages of the campaign, and it's why they are so low in MLS power rankings.

15. Portland Timbers (0-1-3): The Timbers deserve credit for again rallying from behind. Just imagine what Portland can achieve if they can start playing a full 90 minutes every weekend.

14. Toronto FC (1-2-1): Snagging a point against the defending league champs would normally be seen as a good thing for a team that's still rebuilding. When the tie comes as a result of a stoppage time goal such as this, however, it stings just a little bit.

13. DC United (1-2-1): DC only fall in MLS power rankings because they were off and certain other teams picked up wins. There is still no reason to panic about United just yet.

12. Philadelphia Union (2-2-0): Philly maybe deserved a point at Red Bull Arena, but they, like so many teams before them, simply got Henry'd.

11. New York Red Bulls (1-2-2): The 2013 NY Red Bulls are alive and well! So I guess their attack really is just that much better when a motivated and fully fit Thierry Henry is an available option. Who could have guessed?

10. Vancouver Whitecaps (2-2-0): I never would have imagined at the start of the season that back-to-back away fixtures against Houston and Chivas would send the Whitecaps back home with zero out of a possible six points.

9. Real Salt Lake (2-2-1): While many are focused on the likes of Dallas, Montreal and Chivas, RSL are slowly but surely showing what they can achieve when their squad isn't shredded by FIFA dates. Thought to be a team in transition, Salt Lake look like real playoff contenders.

8. San Jose Earthquakes (2-2-1): Add the 2013 'Quakes to the list of victims that have lost in Houston. Saturday's match isn't a reflection of San Jose's overall talent.

7. Columbus Crew (2-1-1): Columbus, like DC, didn't have to worry about league play on Easter Weekend. They have Philly at home on April 6.

6. Sporting KC (2-1-2): Just when you thought SKC may be in real trouble, they go and earn their best result of the campaign. Maybe they are just one of those "give them some time to gel" sides.

5. Houston Dynamo (3-1-0): Houston's next three games include trips to Portland and Toronto surrounding a home match against lowly Chicago. The Dynamo could be atop MLS power rankings by the end of April.

4. Montreal Impact (4-1-0): Their perfect run couldn't last forever. Montreal will have a week to rebound before they host Columbus.

3. Chivas USA (3-1-1): Nobody goes to their matches and their philosophy is somewhat questionable, but results are what matter most. Chivas are currently the second-best team in the MLS West.

2. LA Galaxy (2-0-2): The Galaxy are the only team in the league without a loss in 2013, and they are getting Landon Donovan back. LA is still the team to beat in the conference.

1. FC Dallas (4-1-0): No mistake or oversight here. Dallas have won three straight since that collapse at Chivas USA, and they have earned the top spot in MLS power rankings. Now, let's see if they can keep it.
