2013 Week 15 NFL Power Rankings: Cleveland Browns

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | If it wasn't for bad luck, the Cleveland Browns wouldn't have any luck at all.

The Browns outplayed the Patriots in New England on Sunday, something that absolutely nobody on earth predicted going into the contest. Bad teams find ways to lose, though, and Cleveland is one bad team at the moment. The biggest impact the Browns will have on the postseason will be T.J. Ward unintentionally taking Rob Gronkowski out for the season.

That's not something to take pride in.

The NFL writers over at ESPN bumped the Browns up two spots to 25 despite Cleveland losing at New England. Jason Campbell, who had outplayed Tom Brady up through the touchdown that put the Browns up by two scores late in the game, thrice found the end zone, and he didn't turn the ball over. This stat was pointed out: " Campbell was 9-of-11 for 205 yards and three touchdowns against the Patriots' blitz, including 4-of-5 for 122 yards and a touchdown to Josh Gordon."

Senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco kept the Browns at 27. Prisco has been dishing out truths regarding Cleveland football in his power rankings, and this week was no different. "They blew a game in New England, but in the long run, that might be better for draft position," he wrote. Fans may not always like that kind of thinking, but Prisco isn't wrong.

Frank Schwab thinks that those inside the Cleveland locker room should keep heads held high: " Tough loss at New England, but in the grand scheme of things the Browns should feel pretty good about what happened on Sunday." Schwab placed the Browns at 23 in his latest power rankings.

Like those at ESPN, former head coach and current FOX NFL analyst Brian Billick moved the Browns up in his NFL power rankings. Cleveland now sits at 28 in that list. It wasn't all kind words from Billick, who listed this stat: "The Browns gave up two touchdowns in the final 1:01 to lose to the Patriots, 27-26." That's a great way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Mike Florio of PFT took a shot at another team while putting Cleveland at 27: "Maybe the Colts will offer the Browns three first-round picks for Josh Gordon in the offseason. And Trent Richardson." I don't know that Cleveland fans would accept that deal. Gordon has been incredible.

Jordan Raanan left no ambiguity about his feelings on the franchise: " The Browns always seem to find new ways to lose. Every year." He isn't kidding. I give you Bottlegate as another example.

One could easily write a "12 Days of Christmas" dedicated to Browns' blunders. Last Sunday's loss would make the list. Head coach Rob Chudzinski has to do whatever possible to get his players focused on what's next, because a losing streak to close out the season does this team no good.
