The 138th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, May 18 will be the second of three legs for horse racing's crown jewel, the Triple Crown. No horse has won the elusive trifecta since Affirmed in 1978.

Following his win at the Kentucky Derby, Orb, the odds-on favorite to take the Preakness, will be the next colt to attempt to race into immortality.

When the nine horses post at 6:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, they will be in the following gates (gate number, horse, jockey and odds to win):

1. Orb - Joel Rosario - Even

2. Goldencents - Kevin Krigger - 8 to 1

3. Titletown Five - Julien Leparoux - 30 to 1

4. Departing - Brian Hernandez, Jr. - 6 to 1

5. Mylute - Rosie Napravnik - 5 to 1

6. Oxbow - Gary Stevens - 15 to 1

7. Will Take Charge - Mike Smith - 12 to 1

8. Govenor Charlie - Martin Garcia - 12 to 1

9. Itsmyluckyday - John Velazquez - 10 to 1

The position draw was determined by a pill pull on Wednesday, May 15. A pill pull is a blind draw of numbered ping-pong-sized balls that determines which horse will post in each gate.

The Preakness is limited to a maximum number of 14 starters, a much smaller and more open field than the 20 horses that ran May 4 in the Kentucky Derby.

Despite being the betting favorite, Orb will have to contend with less inhibited opponents due to the size of the field over the 9 1/2 furlongs that stand between the starting gate and the finish line.

The third and final leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, will be contested on Saturday, June 8.
