The PGA Tour comes to the great state of Texas for the 2012 Valero Texas Open. Brendan Steele won the event last year in an exciting final round finish over Charley Hoffman and Kevin Chappell and will look to defend his title this week.
The Course - TPC San Antonio
TPC San Antonio was designed by Pete Dye and Greg Norman in 2009, and is a par 72 course that measures out to 7,522 yards. It is one of the hardest courses to play on the PGA Tour, as it ranked seventh out of fifty one courses in difficulty the previous year. The greens are not the fastest or most difficult the players will come across, as it is approximately 10.5 on the stimp meter. The biggest problem for them will be the length of the course, as it has some truly monster holes; three of the par 5s are 600 plus yards long, and there is a par 3 that is over 240 yards long.
Players to Watch
There has been a lot of hype surround English to begin the 2012 PGA Tour season, and he has lived up to it for the most part. Harris has made eight cuts in ten starts to this point, with five top-25 finishes to go along with it. I like how his game stacks up at TPC San Antonio as well; he drives the ball a long ways, hits a lot of greens in regulation, and putts well to go along with it. It is hard to find someone with a better combination than that at this week's event.
Along with Harris English, Kuchar has played very well this year, making all eight cuts and finishing in the top ten four times. The key for Kuchar this week will be his putting; he currently ranks 118th on Tour in strokes gained from putting. As stated earlier, the greens are not as difficult as one would find in other events on the PGA Tour, so I think he has a good chance to compete this week if he knocks a few putts in.
