In the Olympic archery competition, events are played in a head-to-head elimination format.
The competition begins with each archer taking part in a ranking round. Archers must shoot 72 arrows in 12 phases of six arrows each, with each archer allowed four minutes per phase. The total score of all 72 arrows determines the rankings of each archer. In team competitions, archers compete in teams of three.
The object of the sport of archery is to shoot arrows as close to the center of a target as possible. Olympic targets are 122 cm in diameter; with the gold ring at the center measuring 12.2 cm. Archers shoot at the target from a distance of 70 m.
