The men's and women's Olympic basketball tournaments will be held from July 28-August 12. The games will take place at the Basketball Arena in London which was constructed specifically for this purpose. The arena has a seating capacity of 12,000, and should be full of spectators for a number of highly-anticipated contests.

COMPETITION FORMAT

The preliminary stage of the competition for both the men and women involves 12 teams, divided into groups of six, and each team plays all others in its bracket during this stage. Teams receive two points for a win and one point for a loss. The top four teams in each group battle it out in an eight-team quarter-final round, with the four winners from those games making it to the semi-finals. The semi-finals losers are relegated to the bronze medal contest, while the winners face off in the gold medal game.

For the men, preliminary round games will be held on July 29, 31, August 2, 4, and 6. The four quarter-final contests are slated for August 8, and the semi-final clashes are to be played on August 10. The medals will be decided on Sunday, August 12, with the bronze medal game to start at 11:00, and the gold medal game to follow at 15:00.
