The Ryder Cup was first played at the Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1927. A match-play competition between teams from the USA and Europe, the event is staged every two years, alternating between courses on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

The 39th Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 25-30, 2012, at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois.

This is a brief profile of the 12 members of Team Europe in 2012, including three major champions and one who is making his Ryder Cup debut. The Europeans will be defending the Cup, which they won in 2010 at The Celtic Manor Resort in City of Newport, Wales.

Justin Rose, 2nd appearance, (3-1-0): Age 32, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ten wins worldwide. One win in 2012.

Paul Lawrie, 2nd appearance, (3-1-1): Age 43, born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Eight wins worldwide. Two wins in 2012.

Francesco Molinari, 2nd appearance, (0-2-1): Age 30, born in Turin, Italy. Two wins worldwide. One win in 2012.

Peter Hanson, 2nd appearance, (1-2-0): Age 34, born in Svedala, Sweden. Six wins worldwide. One win in 2012.

Martin Kaymer, 2nd appearance, (2-1-1): Age 27, born in Dusseldorf, Germany. Twelve wins worldwide, including the 2010 PGA Championship.

Nicolas Colsaerts, 1st appearance, (0-0-0): Age 29, born in Brussels, Belgium. Four wins worldwide. One win in 2012.

Harold Andrews has played golf (competitively and recreationally) for nearly 50 years. He considers Jack Nicklaus the greatest of all time.
