2012 NBA Opening Night Schedule: One NBA Fan's Outlook

Yahoo Contributor Network

The 2012-2013 NBA season will begin on Tuesday, October 30. Three games are on the opening night schedule but only two of them will be televised nationally. The first game of the season features two young teams that are in the midst of full-blown rebuilding projects. The final two games of the night, which will be nationally televised on TNT, will highlight the four teams that have won the last five NBA championships.

Washington Wizards at Cleveland Cavaliers, 7:00 p.m. ET on CSNB and FSOH

Reigning Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers will host the Washington Wizards in the very first game of the 2012-2013 NBA season. The Wizards will be without John Wall (2011 Rookie of the Year runner-up) as he continues to rehab a stress injury to his left patella.

Between 2006 and 2008, back when Irving and Wall were both teens, Cleveland and Washington met in the first-round of the playoffs three consecutive times. In the coming years, both Irving and Wall are expected to lead the Cavaliers and Wizards back to the playoffs and Eastern Conference relevance.

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat, 8:00 p.m. ET on TNT

The defending NBA Champion Miami Heat will begin their title defense against the rival Boston Celtics. Each of the past three seasons, the Heat and Celtics have met in the playoffs and the winner of each of those series went on to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals.

Ray Allen was a member of the Celtics in each of those three series, but now the sharp-shooting guard plays his home games in Miami. His final game with the Celtics came against the Heat in Game 7 of the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals. And now, less than five months later, Allen will open the 2012-2013 NBA season donning a Miami Heat uniform.

In addition to Allen, this drama's cast of characters includes Chris Bosh, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rando and Dwyane Wade. The irony, intrigue, mystery and tension will be palpable in AmericanAirlines Arena on opening night when the saga between these two teams continues.

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30 p.m. ET on TNT

The Los Angeles Lakers will debut both Dwight Howard and Steve Nash when they host the Dallas Mavericks in the final game of the night. Two seasons ago, en route to the their first NBA championship, the Mavericks put an end to the Lakers' "Purple Reign" with a four-game sweep of the then two-time defending champions in the 2011 Western Conference semifinals. Last season, both the Mavericks and Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs by Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

After two disappointing postseason runs, Los Angeles used the summer to retool its roster and added Howard and Nash to a starting lineup that already boasts Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. While the Lakers will begin the new season with two additional All-Stars, the Mavericks will be without the services of their perennial All-Star Dirk Nowitzki (recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery) when they visit the Staples Center on opening night.
