2012 MLB Wild Card Round TV Schedule

For the first time in MLB history, the postseason field has expanded from eight to 10 teams. Instead of four teams from each league (three division leaders and one Wild Card team) making it to the playoffs, two Wild Card clubs from each league will meet in a one-game playoff for the right to compete in the Division Series. Both of these games will take place on Friday, October 5 on TBS.

In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals won 12 of their final 16 regular season games in order to clinch the second NL Wild Card spot, beating out the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Atlanta Braves, battling with the Washington Nationals for the NL East division title all season long, knew they had the first NL Wild Card spot for a while and waited to see who they would face in the National League Wild Card game. The pitching matchup for this game will be St. Louis' Kyle Lohse versus Atlanta's Kris Medlen with the winning team facing the Nationals in the NLDS.

In the American League, both the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers did not find out about their Wild Card status until the last days of the regular season. On the final game of the regular season, the Orioles lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1, officially ending their bid for a potential one-game tiebreaker for the AL East title with the New York Yankees. For the last series of the season, the Rangers were swept by the Oakland Athletics to lose their lead in the AL West and become the other AL Wild Card team. The winner of the American League Wild Card game will face the Yankees in the ALDS.
