The Gordon College Highlanders incredible run in the 2012 NJCAA Division I World Series ended in the semifinals.
Gordon College (40-25) -- making their first World Series appearance in their program's history -- finished third in the 2012 national championship after being eliminated in the semifinals by San Jacinto College (Tex.) . The Highlanders lost to the Gators 7-1 on June 1.
The loss to San Jacinto was Gordon's second straight in World Series play as they fell to number one ranked Iowa Western Community College 10-0 in 6 innings on May 31. Prior to the game against IWCC, the Highlanders were the only undefeated team in the tournament as they defeated Shelton State Community College 13-3 in 6 innings, Jefferson College 20-13 and San Jacinto 9-7.
Gordon -- ranked 10 th in the nation -- was a surprise World Series participant as they finished runners-up in the Region 24 tournament before being the upset winner of the East Central District. The Highlanders -- seeded fourth in the Region 24 tournament -- lost to top-seeded Middle Georgia College 7-6 in the Region 24 championship.
Gordon defeated then sixth-ranked Walters State Community College 6-2, then-12th ranked Columbia State Community College 5-3 and then eighth-ranked Middle Georgia College 14-7 (for the championship) in the East Central District tournament. The Highlanders lost to Middle Georgia College 12-2 in district play.
Versus San Jacinto College
In the game against San Jacinto, Gordon didn't do much offensively despite getting 12 runners on base. The Highlanders -- collected 10 hits -- left 10 men on base. Sophomores Bobby Woodall -- 2-for-3 and 1 walk --, Drew Adams -- 2-for-4 --, Jody Stone -- 2-for-4 and freshman Grant Massey -- 2-for-4 -- had two hits apiece to lead Gordon offensively.
After holding San Jacinto to no runs over the first three innings, Highlander sophomore starting pitcher Zach Smith -- suffered the loss -- was tagged for three runs in the bottom of the fourth. San Jacinto added two more runs in the fifth and one run each in the sixth and seventh innings.
Smith allowed five hits and four runs in four innings. Smith also struck out three and walked one. Sophomore Andrew Fessler -- allowed three runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings -- and freshman Dylan Griffin followed Smith on the mound.
