2012 Fantasy Football Week 6 Top Performers by Position: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

Week 6 of the 2012 NFL season had plenty of big individual performances. From Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing six touchdown passes to New York Jets running back Shonn Greene resurgence's at home, here are the best fantasy football players from each position of Week 6.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers at Houston Texans - 39.22 points*

Week 6 statistics: 338 passing yards, 6 passing touchdowns, 17 rushing yards

In a huge night against a solid Texans defense, Rodgers had a career-high six touchdowns on Sunday night. With Cedric Benson unavailable and unproven options in the backfield, the Packers passing game was in full effect and singlehandedly helped a slew of owners earn victories in Week 6.

Honorable mentions: Washington Redskins' Robert Griffin III vs. Minnesota Vikings (36.08 points), Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Josh Freeman vs. Kansas City Chiefs (24.62 points), Philadelphia Eagles' Michael Vick vs. Detroit Lions (24.34 points)

Running back

Shonn Greene, New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts - 34.10 points

Week 6 statistics: 161 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns

After a couple of weeks with little success, Greene had an excellent performance against the Colts. Not just earning his first touchdown since the season opener, he looked unstoppable with both Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight out with injuries. Greene has reaffirmed himself as the primary back in New York and a decent fantasy flex option.

Honorable mentions: Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice vs. Dallas Cowboys (22.60 points), New York Giants' Ahmad Bradshaw at San Francisco 49ers (18.00 points), Buffalo Bills' C.J. Spiller at Arizona Cardinals (17.00 points)

Wide receiver

Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers at Houston Texans - 30.10 points

Week 6 statistics: 121 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns

The biggest benefactor from Rodgers' big game, Nelson had the performance fantasy owners expected with Greg Jennings unavailable. His second career three-touchdown game, he is easily Rodgers' favorite target. After this big Week 6 showing, Nelson has fallen back into good graces of owners.

Honorable mentions: Cincinnati Bengals' A.J. Green at Cleveland Browns (25.50 points), Dallas Cowboys' Dez Bryant at Baltimore Ravens (21.50 points), New England Patriots' Wes Welker at Seattle Seahawks (19.80 points)

Tight end

Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos - 20.10 points

Week 6 statistics: 81 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

With little to show in the first five weeks of the season, Gates exploded as a top target for Philip Rivers with six catches, two of which went for touchdowns. Although Rivers struggled and had four interceptions, both of his touchdown passes went to his big receiver in the first half. After a bye in Week 7, Gates will continue to be a must-start option in Week 8.

Honorable mentions: Minnesota Vikings' Kyle Rudolph at Washington Redskins (13.60 points), Cincinnati Bengals' Jermaine Gresham at Cleveland Browns (12.80 points), Green Bay Packers' Tom Crabtree at Houston Texans (12.20 points)

Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans vs. Pittsburgh Steelers & Jason Hanson, Detroit Lions at Philadelphia Eagles - 16.00 points

Bironas' Week 6 statistics: 1 FG 20-29, 1 FG 30-39, 2 FG 40-49, 2 PAT made

Hanson's Week 6 statistics: 1 FG 0-19, 1 FG 30-39, 2 FG 40-49, 2 PAT made

On Thursday night, Bironas had his most productive game against the Steelers after not attempting a field goal in the previous two games. As for Hanson, he has been productive all season, as his four field goals against the Eagles marks the third time this season he has reached the mark.

Honorable mentions: New York Giants' Lawrence Tynes at San Francisco 49ers (14.00 points), Atlanta Falcons' Matt Bryant vs. Oakland Raiders (14.00 points), Arizona Cardinals' Jay Feely vs. Buffalo Bills (14.00 points)

Team defense

Denver Broncos team defense at San Diego Chargers - 29.00 points

Week 6 statistics: 18 points allowed, 4 sacks, 4 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 touchdowns

The Broncos defense was a tale of two halves. In the first half, they could not slow down the Chargers offense. In the second half, they completely shutdown Rivers and ended the day with six total turnovers and four sacks. The Broncos should be a good team defense in Week 8 after a bye against the New Orleans Saints.

Honorable mentions: New York Giants team defense at San Francisco 49ers (19.00 points), Tampa Bay Buccaneers team defense at Kansas City Chiefs (17.00 points)
