LeBron going back to Cavs:

2012 Fantasy Football Week 5 Last-Minute Popular Drops: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

Due to last-minute injury updates and other late player news, fantasy owners sometimes need to drop a player in order to add a player right before the start of games on Sunday. Here are the most-dropped players by position in fantasy football leagues on the Saturday before Sunday's Week 5 games.

Drop numbers used for this list are from all Yahoo! fantasy football leagues for Saturday, October 6. Players on the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams who have already played their Week 5 game are not included.

Quarterback

Jake Locker, Tennessee Titans - 6,760 drops

Officially declared out for Week 5 action against the Minnesota Vikings, Locker's season has become plagued by injuries early on. While the dislocation occurred on his non-throwing shoulder, Matt Hasselbeck will be starting in his place. With the offensive struggles Tennessee has had this year, it's difficult to view Locker as a viable fantasy option.

Honorable mentions: Oakland Raiders' Carson Palmer (4,032 drops), Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Josh Freeman (3,805 drops), Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson (2,784 drops)

Running back

Peyton Hillis, Kansas City Chiefs - 11,858 drops

For the second straight week, Hillis will be out of action with an ankle injury, making Shaun Draughn the primary backup for Jamaal Charles. A nonfactor this season, this previously top-rated backup running back holds little value at this point of the season.

Honorable mentions: Detroit Lions' Kevin Smith (9,705 drops), New York Giants' Andre Brown (6,449 drops), Buffalo Bills' Tashard Choice (6,328 drops)

Wide receiver

Santonio Holmes, New York Jets - 27,469 drops

Holmes was officially placed on injured reserve on Wednesday after news of a Lisfranc injury from his Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers, making him no longer own-able in leagues. Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill, and Chaz Schilens will be the primary receivers for the Jets moving forward.

Honorable mentions: New York Giants' Ramses Barden (10,204 drops), New Orleans Saints' Lance Moore (9,919 drops), Dallas Cowboys' Kevin Ogletree (8,874 drops)

Tight end

Brandon Pettigrew, Detroit Lions - 4,974 drops

With the Lions on bye, Pettigrew was a necessary drop for some owners needing a tight end for this week. While his numbers this year are okay, he's only had one touchdown in an underperforming Lions offense. Still a very talented player in the Lions offense, Pettigrew could easily be picked up for Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles if his role in the offense grows.

Honorable mentions: Baltimore Ravens' Dennis Pitta (4,343 drops), Denver Broncos' Jacob Tamme (4,309 drops), Indianapolis Colts' Coby Fleener (4,293 drops)

Kicker

Dan Bailey, Dallas Cowboys - 15,425 drops

Like Pettigrew, Bailey's team is on bye, making him a commonly-dropped player this week with owners picking up the likes of Lawrence Tynes and Justin Tucker. So far this season, Bailey has not received many field goal opportunities, making him a less-desirable fantasy kicker.

Honorable mentions: Detroit Lions' Jason Hanson (13,472 drops), Oakland Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski (9,826 drops), San Diego Chargers' Nate Kaeding (9,177 drops)

Team defense

New York Jets team defense - 12,074 drops

The Jets could be in for a rough outing in Week 5 against a dominant Houston Texans offense. After getting run over by the 49ers in Week 4, the Jets have another tough matchup once again. With many aspects of the team trending in the wrong direction, the Jets team defense has been a commonly-purged option.

Honorable mentions: Detroit Lions team defense (8,037 drops), Dallas Cowboys team defense (6,407 drops), Atlanta Falcons team defense (5,049 drops)
