2012 Fantasy Football Week 4 Top Performers by Position: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

Week 4 of the 2012 NFL season had plenty of big individual performances. From New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady having an excellent second half showing to Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline having a career game, here are the best fantasy football players from each position of Week 4.

Tom Brady, New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills - 32.00 points*

Week 4 statistics: 340 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns, 4 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown

Brady looked bad in the first half by only leading the Patriots offense to seven points and a two touchdown deficit to the Bills. The second half was a completely different story with Brady leading his team to six consecutive touchdown drives and a blowout win. With great numbers in this early part of the season, Brady has proven his worth as a top-five fantasy quarterback.

Honorable mentions: Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton at Atlanta Falcons (31.20 points), New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees at Green Bay Packers (29.84 points), Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers vs. New Orleans Saints (29.06 points)

Running back

Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers - 23.10 points

Week 4 statistics: 103 rushing yards, 68 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

Despite only 13 carries, Turner had an excellent game on the ground with 103 yards and 7.9 yards per carry. The surprising aspect of Turner's game came from his three catches that included a 60-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career. Finding his niche in Atlanta's pass-heavy scheme, Turner has built up his stock to that of a reliable RB2.

Honorable mentions: New England Patriots' Stevan Ridley at Buffalo Bills (22.60 points), Seattle Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch at St. Louis Rams (21.50 points), New England Patriots' Brandon Bolden at Buffalo Bills (20.80 points)

Wide receiver

Brian Hartline, Miami Dolphins at Arizona Cardinals - 31.10 points

Week 4 statistics: 253 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

The biggest surprise of Week 4, Hartline only trailed Brady as the top scorer of the week. With a franchise record 253 receiving yards and an impressive 19 targets, he is now the unlikely NFL leader in receiving yards after four games. Hartline will certainly be the wide receiver who is in most demand off the waivers this week.

Honorable mentions: Atlanta Falcons' Roddy White vs. Carolina Panthers (28.90 points), Arizona Cardinals' Andre Roberts vs. Miami Dolphins (23.80 points), New Orleans Saints' Marques Colston at Green Bay Packers (21.30 points)

Tight end

Scott Chandler, Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots - 18.20 points

Week 4 statistics: 62 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

Chandler showed his value as a red-zone player in Week 4 with four catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns. A favorite target for Ryan Fitzpatrick, Chandler has become the only reliable pass-catching target in Buffalo aside from Stevie Johnson. He is a weekly start-able tight end in most leagues after collecting four touchdowns over four games.

Honorable mentions: Dallas Cowboys' Jason Witten vs. Chicago Bears (17.20 points), Carolina Panthers' Greg Olsen at Atlanta Falcons (14.90 points), New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski at Buffalo Bills (14.40 points)

Greg Zuerlein, St. Louis Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks - 18.00 points

Week 4 statistics: 1 FG 20-29, 1 FG 40-49, 2 FG 50+, 1 PAT made

The latest rookie kicker to leave a big impression on the game, Zuerlein made NFL history by being the first kicker to make a both a 50-yard and 60-yard field goal in the same game. With the Rams offense not being the best at finishing drives in the end zone, Zuerlein could prove to be an excellent fantasy option if the Rams offense can get the ball into field goal range and stall.

Honorable mentions: Cleveland Browns' Phil Dawson at Baltimore Ravens (16.00 points), Denver Broncos' Matt Prater vs. Oakland Raiders (16.00 points), Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Connor Barth vs. Washington Redskins (15.00 points), San Diego Chargers' Nick Novak at Kansas City Chiefs (15.00 points)

Team defense

San Francisco 49ers team defense at New York Jets - 29.00 points

Week 4 statistics: 0 points allowed, 3 sacks, 1 interception, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 touchdown, 1 blocked kick

Needless to say, the 49ers team defense shut down the Jets offense on the scoreboard and in the game. From four forced turnovers to a blocked punt, the unit had no trouble stopping Mark Sanchez and the Jets running game. Up against the Bills in Week 5, the 49ers should once again be a great play.

Honorable mentions: Chicago Bears team defense at Dallas Cowboys (24.00 points), Houston Texans team defense vs. Tennessee Titans (23.00 points), Minnesota Vikings team defense at Detroit Lions (23.00 points)
