2012 Fantasy Football Week 4 Last-Minute Popular Drops: Fan’s Review

Yahoo Contributor Network

Due to last-minute injury updates and other late player news, fantasy owners sometimes need to drop a player in order to add a player right before the start of games on Sunday. Here are the most-dropped players by position in fantasy football leagues on the Saturday before Sunday's Week 4 games.

Drop numbers used for this list are from all Yahoo! fantasy football leagues for Saturday, September 29. Players on the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns who have already played their Week 4 game are not included.

Quarterback

Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears - 5,065 drops

As Cutler's stock continues to drop, his fortune doesn't look to get better any time soon against a strong Dallas Cowboys defense. Likely to experience plenty of pressure in the pocket and tough coverage by the secondary, he will likely be a bad play once again for Week 4.

Honorable mentions: Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Josh Freeman (3,196 drops), San Francisco 49ers' Alex Smith (2,973 drops), Detroit Lions' Shaun Hill (2,925 drops)

Running back

Beanie Wells, Arizona Cardinals - 27,712 drops

Officially on the NFL's new injured reserve/designated for return list, Wells will not be allowed to return until November 25th the earliest. With Ryan Williams now the man in charge in Arizona, Wells has little value for owners for the foreseeable future.

Honorable mentions: Kansas City Chiefs' Peyton Hillis (16,306 drops), Detroit Lions' Kevin Smith (14,535 drops), Washington Redskins' Roy Helu (10,566 drops)

Wide receiver

Darrius Heyward-Bey, Oakland Raiders - 9,331 drops

Following a concussion against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3, Heyward-Bey did not practice all week and will not play in Week 4. While his short-term health is still up in the air, he might return on the field on Week 6, which could make him a popular add at that time depending on how he performs in practice.

Honorable mentions: New York Jets' Stephen Hill (9,324 drops), Dallas Cowboys' Kevin Ogletree (8,344 drops), Jacksonville Jaguars' Justin Blackmon (8,279 drops)

Tight end

Kellen Winslow, New England Patriots - 7,828 drops

The Winslow experiment in New England ended quicker than expected. After just one game, he asked for and was granted his release with Aaron Hernandez recovering well. Unless he latches onto another team this season, Winslow has no value to fantasy owners.

Honorable mentions: Denver Broncos' Jacob Tamme (6,713 drops), Indianapolis Colts' Coby Fleener (5,833 drops), Tennessee Titans' Jared Cook (3,546 drops)

Kicker

Nate Kaeding, San Diego Chargers - 66,423 drops

Officially ruled out for Week 4 against the Chiefs, Kaeding will not play and recently-signed Nick Novak will start in his place. With kickers being expendable and easily droppable from week-to-week, he could be a popular add in Week 5 when San Diego faces the New Orleans Saints.

Honorable mentions: New Orleans Saints' Garrett Hartley (3,807 drops), Dallas Cowboys' Dan Bailey (2,752 drops), Tennessee Titans' Rob Bironas (2,341 drops)

Team defense

Pittsburgh Steelers team defense - 8,259 drops

Currently on a bye week, the Steelers defense was likely dropped by many owners who did not want to hold two defenses this week. With teams like the Cardinals and Atlanta Falcons available and offering favorable matchups in Week 4, the Steelers team defense was worth dropping this week.

Honorable mentions: Detroit Lions team defense (6,677 drops), New York Jets team defense (6,329 drops), Buffalo Bills team defense (6,251 drops)
