2012 Fantasy Football Week 2 IDP Waiver Wire Pickups: Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

In Week 1 of the 2012 fantasy football season, St. Louis Rams CB Cortland Finnegan, Cleveland Browns LB D'Qwell Jackson and Balitmore Ravens LB Ray Lewis all had great individual performances. For Week 2, here are five IDPs likely available on the waiver wire who should be considered for use.

The following players are all owned in under 25% of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues as of September 15, 2012.

LB Wesley Woodyard, Denver Broncos (at Atlanta Falcons, 19% owned)

Statistics: 12 solo tackles, 1 sack

A breakout star in 2011, Woodyard started off 2012 extremely well by leading the Broncos with 12 tackles. Serving as the injury replacement for D.J. Williams, who is expected to be out for another two months, Woodyard is an every-down player who has shown a knack at racking up tackles. If Week 1 was any sign of what he could provide, Woodyard could finish the year as a top-20 fantasy linebacker.

S T.J. Ward, Cleveland Browns (at Cincinnati Bengals, 13% owned)

Statistics: 7 solo tackles, 1 assist tackle, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble

As part of the Browns' big defense stand against the Philadelphia Eagles, Ward was one of the many great performers on the day, collecting eight total tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Struggling through an injury-plagued season last year, he looks to be back to the level he played during his breakout rookie season where he had 123 total tackles. When healthy, Ward could be an elite DB IDP this year.

DE Chandler Jones, New England Patriots (vs. Arizona Cardinals, 11% owned)

Statistics: 3 solo tackles, 2 assist tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble

Jones, New England's top draft pick, had an excellent debut against the Tennessee Titans. With an opportunity to play a majority of the snaps on defense, Jones is an excellent athlete who plays the Patriots' 'elephant' position, a hybrid defense end/outside linebacker role. Already looking like an active contributor to New England's defense, Jones could be this year's big breakout defensive lineman.

LB Jerrell Freeman, Indianapolis Colts (vs. Minnesota Vikings, 2% owned)

Statistics: 5 solo tackles, 1 interception, 1 defensive touchdown

One of the top scorers of Week 1, Freeman started his first NFL game with his first interception and touchdown of his career. Starting in place of the injured Pat Angerer, he should benefit from the same role than helped Angerer collect 148 total tackles last season. Expected to fill in at inside linebacker for a couple more weeks, Freeman could be a solid tackling machine for these first few weeks of the season.

CB Alterraun Verner, Tennessee Titans (at San Diego Chargers, 1% owned)

Statistics: 6 solo tackles, 3 assist tackles

With a nice matchup against the Patriots in Week 1, Verner excelled as a tackler with nine on the day. As a rookie in 2010, he collected 101 total tackles at the cornerback position, which has been a difficult but common feat for Titan cornerback over the years. Given what he was able to accomplish in the past, Verner's solid start to 2012 could translate into a big season.

Other Week 2 IDP waiver wire adds of interest: Arizona Cardinals LB Paris Lenon (at New England Patriots, 9% owned), Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy (vs. New Orleans Saints, 7% owned), Pittsburgh Steelers' Larry Foote (vs. New York Jets, 4% owned), Atlanta Falcons S William Moore (vs. Denver Broncos, 4% owned), Philadelphia Eagles S Kurt Coleman (vs. Baltimore Ravens, 4% owned)
