2012 Fantasy Football Week 1 IDP Waiver Wire Pickups: Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

Week 1 of the 2012 fantasy football season is here and owners in IDP leagues are looking for players who could significantly help them to start the year. While top performers from 2011 like D'Qwell Jackson of the Cleveland Browns and Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings are already snatched up, here are five IDPs likely available on the waiver wire who could be considered for Week 1 action.

The following players are all owned in under 25% of Yahoo! fantasy football leagues as of September 4, 2012.

CB Antoine Winfield, Minnesota Vikings (vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, 22% owned)

2011 statistics: 34 solo tackles, 6 assist tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble

A great fantasy producer at the cornerback position when healthy, Winfield averages 90 tackles a year in seasons where he plays all 16 games. Hampered by injuries last season, he'll get a favorable Week 1 matchup against the Jaguars. With Maurice Jones-Drew playing second-fiddle to Week 1 starter Rashard Jennings, Jacksonville may experience struggles in the run game and pass the ball more than usual this week. With quarterback Blaine Gabbert hoping to improve a league-worst passing attack from last season, Winfield should serve as a solid DB1 in Week 1.

DE Elvis Dumervil, Denver Broncos (vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, 17% owned)

2011 statistics: 31 solo tackles, 11 assist tackles, 9.5 sacks

Second behind Von Miller in sacks for the Broncos last season, Dumervil is primed to punish opposing quarterbacks again in 2012. First up on his list are Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers. One of the most sacked quarterbacks last season, Dumervil has a good chance at starting the season well and make plays behind the line of scrimmage.

LB Jon Beason, Carolina Panthers (at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 13% owned)

2011 statistics: 4 solo tackles

In the Panthers' season opener last year against the Arizona Cardinals, Beason tore his Achilles tendon forcing him to miss the rest of the season. Despite missing most of the preseason with a hamstring injury, he has returned to practice this week and coach Ron Rivera believes he'll be available for Week 1 play against the Buccaneers. With at least 120 tackles in each of his first four NFL seasons, he was a force in the Panthers defense and was a reliable IDP play. Up against a Buccaneers offense emphasizing their run game, Beason could have a nice game racking up tackles against rookie Doug Martin and incumbent LeGarrette Blount.

S Quintin Mikell, St. Louis Rams (at Detroit Lions, 12% owned)

2011 statistics: 75 solo tackles, 16 assist tackles, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles

A consistent tackler at the safety position for the Rams, Mikell will likely see plenty of chances to target receivers against a Lions offense bound to pass the ball a lot given the team's injury situation at running back. Averaging over five tackles a game last year, he is easily overlooked on the Rams' defense who will surely see a lot of action against a great Detroit offense.

LB Kevin Burnett, Miami Dolphins (at Houston Texans, 11% owned)

2011 statistics: 83 solo tackles, 22 assist tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 interception, 1 touchdown

Miami visits Houston in Week 1, which means the Dolphins will get a heavy dose of Arian Foster and Ben Tate. A tackling machine for the Dolphins last year, Burnett had four double-digit tackling games last season and comes into this season once again underrated as an IDP option. With plenty of opportunities for tackles, Burnett is a solid LB2 option this week.

Other Week 1 IDP waiver wire adds of interest: Pittsburgh Steelers LB Lawrence Timmons (at Denver Broncos, 22% owned), Buffalo Bills LB Nick Barnett (at New York Jets, 22% owned), Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall (at New Orleans Saints, 16% owned), San Diego Chargers LB Donald Butler (at Oakland Raiders, 8% owned), Pittsburgh Steelers DE Brett Keisel (at Denver Broncos, 7% owned)
