2012 Fantasy Football Underrated Starters for Week 2: Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

Making decisions on who to start every week is one of the most difficult aspects of playing fantasy football. In Week 2, there are decisions that need to be made in order to put up the best possible starting lineup. Here's a look at some players at each position with great Week 2 situations and should be considered for starting in more leagues*.

QB Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts (vs. Minnesota Vikings, 83% owned, 12% started*)

Yahoo! Sports Staff Composite Ranking: 12

After a decent start to his NFL career, Luck will get a chance to face a much weaker Minnesota secondary. Looking great when hooking up with Reggie Wayne and Coby Fleener, Luck can rebound from his Week 1 outing in what could be a shootout. With confidence after his first start, Luck looks to break out in Week 2.

Week 1 Underrated QB: Washington Redskins' Robert Griffin III - 19-for-26, 320 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, 42 rushing yards

Honorable Mentions: Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger (vs. New York Jets, 90% owned, 22% started) and Houston Texans' Matt Schaub (at Jacksonville Jaguars, 82% owned, 21% started)

RB Alfred Morris, Washington Redskins (at St. Louis Rams, 79% owned, 47% started)

Yahoo! Sports Staff Composite Ranking: 13

The listed starter in Week 2, Morris appears to have claimed the starting running back job in Washington. The Rams secondary features Courtland Finnegan and rookie Janoris Jenkins, meaning the Redskins offense could rely on the run game more and Morris could have a repeat performance in Week 2.

Week 1 Underrated RB: Carolina Panthers' DeAngelo Williams - -1 rushing yard, 5 receiving yards

Honorable Mentions: Denver Broncos' Willis McGahee (at Atlanta Falcons, 91% owned, 40% started) and Indianapolis Colts' Donald Brown (vs. Minnesota Vikings, 82% owned, 31% started)

WR Malcom Floyd, San Diego Chargers (vs. Tennessee Titans, 82% owned, 43% started)

Yahoo! Sports Staff Composite Ranking: 21

As the go-to wide receiver for San Diego, Floyd should be started in more leagues. As a big-play wide receiver possessing good chemistry with quarterback Philip Rivers, he'll be a part of a major Chargers passing attack against the Titans, especially since Ryan Mathews expects to be out one again in Week 2. Floyd could very well score another touchdown this week and break away for a big play or two downfield.

Week 1 Underrated WR: Indianapolis Colts' Reggie Wayne - 9 receptions, 135 receiving yards

Honorable Mentions: San Francisco 49ers' Michael Crabtree (vs. Detroit Lions, 75% owned, 33% started) and Oakland Raiders' Darrius Heyward-Bey (at Miami Dolphins, 78% owned, 19% started)

TE Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings (at Indianapolis Colts, 35% owned, 9% started)

Yahoo! Sports Staff Composite Ranking: 8

While Luck and Fleener are developing a great QB-TE chemistry in Indianapolis, Christian Ponder is doing the same with Rudolph. A great matchup against a bad pass defense, Rudolph could sneak in for his first touchdown of the season. Week 2 could be the breakout game to jumpstart a great fantasy season for Rudolph.

Week 1 Underrated TE: Carolina Panthers' Greg Olsen - 6 receptions, 56 receiving yards

Honorable Mentions: Tennessee Titans' Jared Cook (at San Diego Chargers, 62% owned, 15% started) and Philadelphia Eagles' Brent Celek (vs. Baltimore Ravens, 73% owned, 19% started)

K Shayne Graham, Houston Texans (at Jacksonville Jaguars, 8% owned, 7% started)

Yahoo! Sports Staff Composite Ranking: 7

Playing for a great offense that had no troubles against the Miami Dolphins, Graham should be in line for another good showing as the Texans kicker against the Jaguars. In a productive spot against a team Houston should have no trouble defeating, Graham should be used confidently as a kicker in Week 2.

Week 1 Underrated K: San Diego Chargers' Nate Kaeding - 5-for-5 FGs, 1 PAT made

Honorable Mentions: San Diego Chargers' Nate Kaeding (vs. Tennessee Titans, 56% owned, 45% started) and Washington Redskins' Billy Cundiff (at St. Louis Rams, 33% owned, 24% started)

Cincinnati Bengals team defense (vs. Cleveland Browns, 42% owned, 33% started)

Yahoo! Sports Staff Composite Ranking: 1

The Bengals struggled against the Ravens in Week 1 but have a much better matchup against the Browns in Week 2. Facing a rookie quarterback lacking proven receiving options, the Bengals defense could be rack up plenty of defensive stats and be a top fantasy defense in Week 2.

Week 1 Underrated DEF: Buffalo Bills team defense - 42 points allowed, 1 interception

Honorable Mentions: Oakland Raiders team defense (at Miami Dolphins, 19% owned, 16% started) and Washington Redskins team defense (at St. Louis Rams, 10% owned, 8% started)
