2011 NHL Trade Tracker

Yahoo Sports

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke kicked off the NHL trade frenzy when he shipped defenseman Francois Beauchemin back to Anaheim on Feb. 9 in exchange for winger Joffrey Lupul, prospect Jake Gardiner and a conditional draft pick. Including that transaction, 25 deals were made in the days and weeks leading up to the deadline.

Here’s a complete list of moves made in advance of the NHL trade deadline, as well as deadline-day deals – with analysis. The deadline is Monday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. ET.

BOSTON

ANALYSIS: The Wild adds Penner! Well, not that Penner. Jeff – not Dustin – is a 23-year-old defenseman who has played two NHL games, both with the Bruins last season. Lehtonen has played only 15 NHL games – all with the Predators in 2006-07. Khudobin, 24, has played six NHL games for the Wild over the past two seasons.

ATLANTA

ANALYSIS: MacIntyre, 27, was a fourth-round pick in 2001. He has played only two NHL games – both with the Canucks in 2007-08. Festerling, 24, has played 83 NHL games for the Ducks over three seasons, but only one this year.

ANALYSIS: Sestito, 23, was a third-round pick in the 2006 draft. He has size at 6-foot-5, 228 pounds. He played 13 games for the Blue Jackets over the past three seasons. Moore, 26, returns for his second tour with the Jackets, for whom he played four games in 2009-10. Chaput, 18, was a third-round pick in 2010.

FLORIDA

ANALYSIS: Higgins is injured, but he should be back within a couple of weeks to help fortify the Canucks’ fourth line, perhaps their only weakness when they’re healthy. The 27-year-old pending unrestricted free agent has some playoff experience and can provide secondary scoring. Oberg, 23, has played only four games for the Canucks.

David Steckel, F
2nd-round draft pick (2012)
Logo

NEW JERSEY

ANALYSIS: Arnott was willing to waive his no-trade clause only for a solid playoff team, and he gives the Caps the help at center they need in order to make a run. Arnott brings size (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) and experience (30 goals in 106 playoff games, including the double-OT Stanley Cup winner for the Devils in 2000). Devils GM Lou Lamoriello gets a big center and a high draft pick in return. Steckel (6-5, 217), is less accomplished than Arnott, but he’s also younger (he turns 29 on March 15) and is signed through 2012-13 at a very reasonable cap hit of $1.1 million.

ANAHEIM

ANALYSIS: If the Canucks had a pressing need, it was fourth-line center. Florida’s Marty Reasoner apparently was not willing to waive his no-trade clause with a baby on the way. The Canucks reportedly weren’t interested in the Islanders’ Zenon Konopka. Alain Vigneault coached gritty pest Lapierre in junior, and GM Mike Gillis didn’t have to give up a player off his league-leading roster. Perrault, 27, has played mostly in the AHL. Sharp, 25, played eight games for the Ducks last year, but has spent this season in the minors.

ATLANTA

ANALYSIS: Flames GM Jay Feaster knows Modin well. Modin was an important contributor when Feaster’s Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004, with 19 points in 23 games during that playoff run. Modin is now 36 and a pending unrestricted free agent, but he’s a good, veteran rental at a low price for the Flames as they continue their surprising playoff push.

ANALYSIS: Nope. The Rangers didn’t get Brad Richards. The guy they got was Mitchell, 26, who didn’t fit into the Leafs’ plan and will provide depth down the middle.

EDMONTON

ANALYSIS: Kings GM Dean Lombardi, previously criticized for being too timid, now is being criticized for being too bold. Under pressure to add a top-six forward, Lombardi got a good one in Penner, a 28-year-old power winger signed through next season at a cap hit of $4.25 million. He didn’t give up prized prospect Brayden Schenn. But he gave up a first-rounder, another draft pick and Teubert, the 13th overall selection in the 2008 draft. Perhaps he can do that knowing he has Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson already on the blue line, along with some other good young talent.

FLORIDA

ANALYSIS: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford headed into the deadline hoping to add help on defense without giving up any of his future. He landed a top-four defenseman in Allen, 30, who has another season left on his contract at a $2.9 million cap hit. He gave up the 32-year-old Samsonov, a pending unrestricted free agent. This appears to be a straight salary dump for the Panthers, who now have almost $3 million more in financial flexibility for next season.

OTTAWA

ANALYSIS: Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman added depth on defense without giving up anyone off his roster. Senators GM Bryan Murray continued to get good value in his fire sale. Campoli, 26, can move the puck and kill penalties – and just maybe help the defending Stanley Cup champions make it back into the playoffs. The Senators add yet another draft pick to help them rebuild. Poltuny, 26, has spent most of the season in the minors and is set to be an unrestricted free agent.

ANALYSIS: The Oilers added some youth at the minor-league level. Montgomery, 22, a fourth-round pick in 2006, has yet to play an NHL game. Belle, 26, the 30th overall pick in 2003, is on to yet another organization. He has played 16 NHL games for three teams – nine for the Minnesota Wild in 2006-07, two for the Montreal Canadiens in ’09-10 and five for the Oilers this season.

PHOENIX

ANALYSIS: The Coyotes were looking to upgrade their blue line, but had to make a dollar-for-dollar deal with their ownership situation still uncertain. So in comes Klesla, who carries a $2.975 million cap hit through 2013-14, and out go Upshall, a pending unrestricted free agent with a $2.25 million cap hit, and Lepisto, a pending restricted free agent with an $800,000 cap hit. Klesla, the fourth overall pick in the 2000 NHL draft, has been hampered by injuries and called a bust. But he’s still only 28 and can log more than 20 minutes a game, and playing outside Columbus for the first time could be the change of scenery he needs. Byers was a second-round pick in 2004 who has played just six NHL games. Upshall gives the Jackets some speed and scoring potential, while Lepisto moves the puck well.

Jake Hauswirth, F
3rd-round draft pick (2011)
Logo

FLORIDA

ANALYSIS: Capitals GM George McPhee needed to help his offense and defensive depth, without giving up a player off his roster. Wideman, 27, can move the puck. He had nine goals and 33 points for the Panthers this season and has a year left on his contract at a cap hit of $3.9 million. The third-round pick is probably more valuable to the Panthers’ rebuilding project than Hauswirth, a 23-year-old in the ECHL. .

FLORIDA

ANALYSIS: Rick Dudley has not given up. His Thrashers have slipped to 11th in the East, four points out of a playoff spot, and need to do everything they can to sell hockey in Atlanta and the franchise to investors. Dvorak, 33, isn’t a difference-maker, but he’s a rental who adds energy, size, speed and experience. The Panthers get younger with Bergfors, 23, who has 11 goals this season – four more than Dvorak. They take Rissmiller off the Thrashers’ books. The 32-year-old was making $1 million in the minors until a recent call-up. His contract is up after the season.
