2 Cornerback Prospects for the Oakland Raiders to Consider

Earlier in the month, Cover 32 Raiders discussed Sean Smith and what can the Oakland Raiders realistically do. The article nails it with, “CB Sean Smith suffered through a nightmarish season filled with blown coverages, poor techniques and a perceived lack of physicality.” I lost count of how many big plays Smith surrendered and grunted at my TV over it.“What are you doing?!” Then, Derek Carr and our offense erased the mistake, winning the game. A win definitely overshadowed the disappointment of an ugly play, because at the end of the day that’s what truly mattered. To hone in and point out what I felt was the most disappointing of defensive performances; I’d say many were of Sean Smith’s.

In 4th season in the NFL, David Amerson can play a solid corner. Oakland needs a solid CB, that understands the route recognition and timing of receivers. Under those circumstances, the team needs an infusion of new talent. Knowing Teez Tabor will likely go before 24th, here’s a list. In order of preference for the Oakland Raiders to consider:

Adoree Jackson/USC/Ht: 5’11 Wt: 185

The Oakland Raiders can definitely use on Jackson’s versatility on their roster. He is the perfect definition of blend of athleticism and aggression. As an Oregon Ducks fan, I still couldn’t help but stay engaged the USC game because of entertaining it is to watch this guy. I would delight to see him in Silver and Black this upcoming season.

Damontae Kazee/SDSU/Ht: 5’10 Wt: 190

Kazee owns the best pair of CB hnads in the draft class. A true ballhawk, Kazee accurately reads the route and times his break. Check this highlight video against SJSU and keep your eye on #23. Strong defensive skills ended his senior season with 58 tackles and 7 interceptions. If you ask me, he has a bit of beast mode in him making him a dangerous opponent.

Yet, these players aren’t on the roster for this weekend East-West Shrine game, but will hear their names called during the draft. Additionally, we have the Scouting Combine to look forward to on Feb 28 through March 6. The off-season is still an exciting time.

All things considered, the Oakland Raiders have their choice of top flight corners. Right now, it boils down to who they see contributing immediately. Whether it’s these two or not, the secondary must improve in 2017.
