    Netanyahu asks Israeli court to defer deadline on conscription controversy

    Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Israel's top court on Thursday to defer a deadline for the government to come up with a new military conscription plan that would address mainstream anger at the exemptions granted to ultra-Orthodox Jews. The draft issue is especially sensitive as Israel's armed forces, made up mostly of teenaged conscripts and civilians mobilised for reserve duty, wage a nearly six-month-old war in Gaza to try to eliminate the Islamist group Hamas that rules the Palestinian enclave.

    Adani Energy mulls borrowing up to $600 million from banks, Bloomberg News reports

    India's Adani Energy Solutions is looking to borrow as much as $600 million to fund smart meter projects for electricity supply, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday citing people familiar with the matter. In December, Adani Energy had formed a joint venture with a company backed by Abu Dhabi's International Holding Company to grow its smart meter business in India and globally. The Indian government, which has been pushing for the installation of smart meters, plans to install 250 million units across the country by 2025.
