Texas hopes that it has improved significantly since the beginning of the season.
The third-seeded Longhorns can gain a measure of revenge against Georgia when the teams match up for the second time this season in the second round of the Chattanooga Regional.
Texas is seeking a fourth straight trip to the regional semifinals. To do so, the Longhorns will have to reverse a 78-64 loss at Georgia on Nov. 21 in the second game of the season for both teams.
Lady Bulldogs freshman forward Tasha Humphrey—playing a nationally ranked team for the first time—scored 27 points in her head-to-head battle with Longhorns center Tiffany Jackson, who also scored 27 points. Humphrey came through with 24 points in the second half to rally Georgia.
The Longhorns led by as many as 15 points in the first half before the Lady Bulldogs shot more than 62 percent from the field and scored 51 points after halftime.
“That was early, the second game of the season, and teams change over time,” Texas coach Jody Conradt said. “It’s important for our coaches to see what they’re doing today.”
Texas received little from its backcourt, as Nina Norman was held scoreless and Jamie Carey managed only five points.
Norman, playing with a heavy bandage on her left hand, scored 20 points in the Longhorns’ 64-47 win over Oral Roberts in the first round Saturday. Jackson added 13 points and five steals for Texas, which forced 23 turnovers.
The performance was enough to concern Georgia coach Andy Landers.
“After watching them play (Saturday), I was especially impressed,” Landers said. “I don’t remember anything about the last time we played. You just have to start over.”
Cori Chambers scored 19 points and Humphrey added 13 despite 3-of-11 shooting as Georgia advanced with a 75-49 win over Rice. The Lady Bulldogs shot just under 37 percent from the field.
Chambers’ effort helped Georgia pull away after a slow start. The Lady Bulldogs closed the first half on a 22-8 run for a 17-point cushion at halftime.
“The coaches didn’t need to say anything,” Chambers said. “We got ourselves fired up. That first stretch got us warmed up.”
The Lady Bulldogs are trying to reach the regional semifinals for the eighth time in 11 years. Last season, Georgia lost to LSU in the West Regional championship.
Georgia leads the all-time series 4-2.
