Instead, the Mustangs collapsed under the weight of numerous injuries and finished 1-11, leading to a coaching change.</p> <p>Outgoing coach Phil Bennett insisted the Mustangs were a lot closer than they appeared to be last fall. Now new coach June Jones, fresh off a successful run at Hawaii that led to a Sugar Bowl appearance last season, becomes the fifth SMU coach to take a shot at turning the program around since the NCAA hit the program with the death penalty in 1987.</p> <p>"I think from skill-level players, we're better at SMU," Jones said.
