Joe Paterno was holding court at age 81, with no sign the Hall of Famer has lost his comic touch or his desire to coach Penn State. "I like what I'm doing, I'm having fun, I enjoy it. I don't go into a staff meeting and sit there like this," Paterno said before slouching over with his head down, looking at the floor as if he were depressed.

Joe Paterno isn't one to hang a "Gone Fishing" sign on his door, so don't expect him to join Purdue coach Joe Tiller on one of his good friend's treasured fishing trips when Tiller retires after this season. JoePa won't be asking Tiller for tips, either, about how to handle retirement whenever he's ready to call it quits at Penn State.

Ex-Penn State player pleads guilty to knife threat (AP)

Former Penn State football player Chris Bell has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of making terroristic threats. Police said Bell in April stormed into a campus dining hall and threatened teammate Devon Still with an 8-inch knife. Police say three assistant football coaches disarmed Bell, who was later kicked off the team.

Joe Paterno entered his 43rd spring as Penn State's head coach with a big question mark at quarterback and even more questions about his contract. The Nittany Lions exited the spring with both questions unanswered.

Paterno's contract, which expires at the end of 2008, will not be renewed, and his coaching status will be determined on a season-by-season basis. He said his focus is on the '08 season, which could be a big one if a few things fall into place for Penn State.

Whether junior Daryll Clark or sophomore Pat Devlin emerges as the starter, the Nittany Lions will need consistent quarterback play to make an offense filled with talent but lacking a true superstar go. Daryll Clark did some heavy lifting to win his first competition of the year, though it had nothing to do with the starting quarterback job at Penn State. Not surprisingly, much of the talk before Clark and three of his Nittany Lion teammates won a charity strength and conditioning contest this past weekend was about football.
