Stillwater runs deep with offensive talent, so the primary focus this spring at Oklahoma State was to raise the bar on defense.

The Cowboys ranked 101st in total defense and 112th in pass defense nationally out of 119 Bowl Championship Subdivision teams in 2007. Georgia, Troy, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma all hung at least 35 points on the Pokes.

If their performance this spring is any indication, the JUCO-infused Cowboys should be much tougher in 2008.

"We're a better defense," head coach Mike Gundy told The Oklahoman. "It's really hard for me to predict how much better until we start playing in September. But I do feel we're better from a depth standpoint, from a toughness standpoint.

Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge for allegedly attacking a police officer in January. Payne County prosecutors originally charged Pettigrew with felony assault and battery on a police officer, but they reached a plea agreement with Pettigrew in which he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery.
