Rocky Long was an impatient man during spring practice.

New Mexico, which began the spring as one of the youngest teams in the 11th-year coach's tenure, made solid strides in its 2 1/2 weeks of practice. Long, however, already has an eye on UNM's first four games of 2008, and he wasn't satisfied.

"We did some good things in spring ball," Long said. "Our first-team offense and defense looked fairly decent, even though we still have some questions on the offensive line. And we had some young guys step up, and that's going to be the key whether our team is any good, if the young guys can play well.

"But we didn't progress as much as I would've liked, considering our schedule next season."
