Florida State opens its season Saturday with a new quarterback and a bunch of backups filling in for suspended starters. After successive 7-6 seasons, Seminoles coaches are eager to see what they've got against Western Carolina. The Seminoles will go without more than a half dozen of their best players for the first three games because of suspensions for academic reasons or misconduct.

There is no marquee stage. No conference or geographic rival to stir up fans. No television. No placement in the top-25 poll.

In so many ways, this is a strange start for the Florida State Seminoles. After so many years of primetime openers on national television, the Seminoles are saddled with obscurity for Saturday's game against Western Carolina.

Who? Yes, Western Carolina, followed by UT-Chattanooga next week. It's the softest opening schedule in Bobby Bowden's tenure.

But it's also a necessity. The Seminoles will have a sizeable portion of their starting lineup on the bench, either through injury or the fallout from the academic fraud scandal. While the school will not officially say who is not eligible, it's not hard to decipher.

Christian Ponder will start at quarterback for Florida State in its season opener against Western Carolina. Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher selected Ponder over senior Drew Weatherford, who has started 33 games for the Seminoles, and sophomore D'Vontrey Richardson. Ponder, a sophomore, has thrown only 18 passes in college.

Florida State defensive tackle Emmanuel Dunbar was taken by ambulance to a hospital after suffering a back injury Wednesday in practice. The redshirt junior has a history of back problems, including a 2006 surgery to repair two herniated disks. Team officials had to cut Dunbar's jersey and shoulder pads off Wednesday to load him into the ambulance.
