Central Florida entered the spring with big questions to answer at tailback and quarterback. The Knights will still be looking for those answers when they report for preseason practice.

The biggest challenge facing UCF is replacing tailback Kevin Smith, the nation's leading rusher in 2007. The coaches had hoped to spend the spring preparing junior Phillip Smith for the starting job but he sat out most of the spring and will miss significant time this summer as he rehabs from a leg injury.

That makes it more and more likely that UCF coach George O'Leary will be taking a very close look at the four freshmen backs expected to arrive in August, especially Latavius Murray.

A University of Central Florida football player who died after spring drills had a pre-existing medical condition worsened by physical stress, autopsy results released Thursday showed. The Orange County Medical Examiner's Office said Ereck Plancher, 19, had a sickle cell trait that caused problems with his red blood cells during physical exertion.

UCF running back suspended after arrest (AP)

Central Florida running back Ricky Kay was suspended from the team following an arrest over the weekend. According to an affidavit, the 19-year-old was charged with preventing or hindering firefighter equipment and damage of property. Kay was arrested Saturday morning, posted $1,100 bond and was released.
