Air Force "improved a ton" during 15 spring practices, according to quarterback Shea Smith.

But the Falcons, who must replace 14 starters from the surprising 2007 team that finished second in the Mountain West and went to the Armed Forces Bowl, still have plenty of work to do. And many of the questions they faced before the start of spring practice remain unanswered.

Foremost among them is who will play quarterback. Smith, who was the backup to four-year starter Shaun Carney last season and will be a senior in the fall, entered spring listed as the starter. But junior-to-be Eric Herbort jumped Smith during spring practices and—despite a disappointing performance in the final scrimmage—enters summer with a slight lead over Smith.
