Pac-10, Big 10 the villains in BCS plus-one plans

If the "plus-one" playoff model is ultimately rejected, and it will be, leaving college football with at least another six years of status quo, an angry public won't need a posse to find the culprits. The Pacific 10 and Big Ten conferences, along with the Rose Bowl, already have been identified in wanted posters according to the Los Angeles Times.

"I think it's an interesting label, but it's a caricature," Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said Tuesday during a break at the annual meeting of Bowl Championships Series commissioners.

Delany knows how this is going down. There is not going to be a playoff in college football, and he's going to get blamed for it, along with Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen and Rose Bowl Chief Executive Mitch Dorger. All have staunchly opposed a change in the current BCS system, which in its 10-year history has been controversial, to say the least. The Rose Bowl, to be clear, is not to blame, although it has received its fair — or is that unfair? — share in some media accounts. The Rose Bowl is merely a concerned spectator. It has an opinion but no clout in this playoff fight and will go where the BCS wind blows.

Will BCS commissioners work toward playoff? Umm, no!

It is halftime in Fox's contractual compact with college football -- two years down and two to go — with important decision-makers meeting in South Florida on Monday to discuss possible end games. Is this, finally, the first step toward a modified playoff? Short answer: no, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The "Plus One" model, as promised in January by incoming BCS coordinator John Swofford, will be on the table at the annual Bowl Championship Series commissioners meetings. Yet, the plan seemingly has little chance of succeeding so long as the Pacific 10 and Big Ten conferences remain opposed. Swofford said on a conference call Friday that any changes to the format would have to be by unanimous consent of the 11 BCS commissioners.

"I don't think it can be forced on anyone one way or another," Swofford said of the playoff proposal.

UCLA quarterback Cowan lost for 2008 season

UCLA's quarterback situation became a little clearer, though not more positive, on Saturday. Patrick Cowan said he will undergo surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will be unable to play in the 2008 season. Ben Olson, meanwhile, will likely undergo surgery to have a screw put in his right foot to help his fractured fifth metatarsal heal. He said he would be out six to eight weeks. Both quarterbacks, who will be seniors in the fall, were injured during Thursday's practice on back-to-back plays.

Cowan, overwhelmed by the news, met with reporters before Saturday's scrimmage, saying, "All I know is I need the surgery and I'm not going to be able to play next season."

Cowan, who has already used a redshirt season, was unsure whether he would petition for a sixth year of eligibility, saying, "I don't know. I wasn't expecting this. There are a lot of things that can happen at this point. I need some time to think about what's going to happen."
