Taiwan appoints senior executive at TSMC supplier as new economy minister

Taiwan's incoming premier announced on Tuesday he had appointed a senior executive from TSMC supplier Topco Scientific as economy minister, saying he would be tasked with resolving the persistent problem of stable power supplies. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co is the world's largest contract chipmaker and the chip industry is the backbone of Taiwan's export-dependent economy. Cho Jung-tai, who will not take over as premier until president-elect Lai Ching-te is inaugurated on May 20, told reporters the chairman of semiconductor material supplier Topco Group, J.W. Kuo, would be the economy minister, replacing Wang Mei-hua, a lawyer by training.

House to send Mayorkas impeachment articles to the Senate, forcing a trial

House Speaker Mike Johnson says he is sending impeachment charges against Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday, forcing senators to convene a trial on the allegations that the Homeland Security secretary has “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce existing immigration laws. While the Senate is obligated to convene a trial under the rules of impeachment once the charges are walked across the Capitol, Democrats are expected to try to dismiss or table the charges before the arguments get underway. Majority Democrats have said the GOP case against Mayorkas doesn’t rise to the “high crimes and misdemeanors” laid out as a bar for impeachment in the Constitution, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., likely has enough votes to end the trial immediately if he decides to do so.
