  • Another Miami Hurricane dies too young. I remember so many of them.

Another Miami Hurricane is gone too soon. Another reason for me to look back, be sad, smile and gather my perspective. Got the word this morning that former cornerback Leonard Myers has died of cancer. He was 38. I immediately thought of Leonard’s father, Leonard Sr., who died of cancer in January 1996 during Myers’ junior year at Fort Lauderdale Dillard High. Then I thought of Leonard Jr’s own children when I talked to him last in 2010: three daughters —Lauren Brinee, now 16; Brittany, 14; and Lia, 11. Before every defensive play, Leonard Jr. would kiss his right forefinger, pound his right fist to his heart and point toward the sky in tribute to his father. “My dad used to say, ‘Don’t take

  • 'This is family. I'm home': Cajun nation celebrates LSU's Ed Orgeron with a party in Larose

LAROSE — The planning for this party began like so much does here in this Cajun-filled swath of south Louisiana: on a front porch, over some hot local seafood, mosquitoes swarming and spirits flowing. Andrew Martin, a local organizer, and Mike Hillman, a former LSU quarterback, were there. They agreed to have a bash — a fais do-do, some would say here; a féte, as the French call it — celebrating the hiring of native son Ed Orgeron as LSU’s football coach. Let the Cajuns come, they thought. Let them eat and dance. Let them see the guy who has become the most heralded person from this bayou finger of Louisiana — the one that starts with Larose and Cut Off and ends with Port Fourchon and Grand Isle,

  • UNC wants to play fast, but not against beating Virginia at its own game

For at least a couple of practices every season, maybe more, North Carolina coach Roy Williams asks his players to do something very unlike Williams: He asks them to slow down, to not push the pace, to – imagine this, considering the source – take your time trying to score. That is not how Williams likes to play. He said so again on Friday, the day before UNC’s game against Virginia on Saturday at the Smith Center, and he emphasized his desire to consistently score 80 or 90 points -- or more. “But to be a really good team,” he said, “you’ve got to win in the 50s and 60s, as well. And we understand that.” There might not be two coaches in the country whose philosophies are more diametrically opposed
