Kansas vs. Duke – Champions Classic (New York) – Nov. 15 (9 p.m.): The Champions Classic has easily become the most anticipated non-conference event most years (until the PK80 next year), and this year’s matchup between the Jayhawks and Blue Devils is the premier non-conference game of the season. It’s not hard to envision this as a Final Four or national title preview, and there’s a very real chance that it could end up being a matchup between No. 1 Duke vs. No. 2 Kansas. 2. Michigan State at Duke – ACC/Big Ten Challenge – Nov. 29 (9:30 p.m.): This game gets the nod over similarly interesting matchups because it’s going to be played on campus in Durham at Cameron Indoor.
Golf star and sports-marketing pioneer Arnold Palmer died Sunday at age 87 in his native Pennsylvania, but his ties to North Carolina and Charlotte ran deep. Palmer played pivotal roles in bringing the PGA Tour here with the Kemper Open during the 1970s and later made regular appearances in senior PGA Tour events during the 1980s and 1990s. Palmer attended Wake Forest University, and he counted Charlotte real estate executive Johnny Harris as a lifelong friend. In July, when I interviewed Harris at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey during the PGA Championship, he told me and another reporter that Palmer remained his most trusted adviser in golf matters.
