      Michigan AD Warde Manuel hires Mel Pearson among 'few' candidates

      Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel acknowledged there were “a few" candidates other than Michigan Tech coach Mel Pearson that he considered for Michigan's hockey coach opening. Pearson, an assistant coach at Michigan for 23 seasons, was ultimately offered the job and was introduced at a news conference this afternoon in Ann Arbor. Billy Powers, who has spent the past 24 seasons on U-M's coaching staff under Red Berenson, did not interview for the position. Powers attended Pearson’s news conference, along with Berenson, who stepped down earlier this month, and assistant coach Brian Wiseman.
