      GW names Joseph interim coach, replacing fired Lonergan

      George Washington named Maurice Joseph its interim basketball coach on Tuesday, replacing Mike Lonergan, who was fired after an investigation into his conduct. Joseph had been an assistant on Lonergan's staff for the past five seasons. ''In his five years at GW, Maurice has shown himself to be selflessly dedicated to the success of our student-athletes and fully committed to our department and university,'' athletic director Patrick Nero said in a statement.

      A former women’s basketball coach at San Diego State University won a wrongful-termination lawsuit on Wednesday, and a jury awarded her $3.35 million in damages, the Los Angeles Times reported. The coach, Beth Burns, said in her lawsuit that the university had fired her after she complained of violations of Title IX, the federal gender-equity law, in the basketball program. Ms. Burns, the winningest coach in the university’s history, was dismissed in 2013 shortly after her team won more games in a season than any of its predecessors, the Times reported.       NEW YORK — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s next book will be a fond look back at his long friendship with John Wooden, the celebrated basketball coach at UCLA. “Coach Wooden and Me” will be published next June and will combine personal memories and lessons learned from his friend and mentor, Grand Central Publishing told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
