North Carolina coach Roy Williams apologized to Louisville's Rick Pitino after the Cardinals coach had a heated verbal exchange with a fan as he came off the court for halftime during Wednesday night's game. UNC team spokesman Matt Bowers said the fan was ejected after the incident.
Ole Miss confirmed Wednesday that it has received an updated Notice of Allegations (NOA) from the NCAA. As a result, the school announced via a 20-minute video that it has been charged with lack of institutional control and will impose a one-year postseason ban on top of the sanctions it imposed on itself in May 2016. As part of that postseason ban, athletic director Ross Bjork said the school “must forfeit,” per SEC rules, its annual portion of SEC postseason football revenue for next year.
A 17-year-old transgender wrestler who qualified for the girls state tournament while transitioning from female to male has become a high-profile test of a year-old Texas policy now being criticized by the attorney who tried to keep the athlete from competing. Mack Beggs, a junior at Euless Trinity High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, won a regional championship after two opposing wrestlers forfeited, apparently over concerns that Beggs has an unfair advantage because of testosterone treatments that are part of the transition. Beggs, who has a 52-0 record, has a first-round match in the state tournament Friday in suburban Houston.
