ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (AP)—Once Duke got its inside and outside game going, the second-ranked Blue Devils were going to be tough to beat.
Tricia Liston scored 22 points and Elizabeth Williams added 18 to help No. 2 Duke rout Xavier 81-54 at the Paradise Jam on Thursday.
Williams also had eight rebounds and four blocks for the Blue Devils (6-0).
“Elizabeth was demanding the basketball and working very hard for position,” Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “She got double- and triple-teamed, but she handled herself very well and went up strong. I think Elizabeth really set the tone for the team in terms of attacking, and that is always important in these games.”
Chelsea Gray had eight points, nine assists and nine rebounds for Duke, which shot a season-high 60 percent from the field and had 10 blocks.
Duke was up by three 7 1/2 minutes in before scoring 20 of the final 29 points of the half to take a 40-26 lead at the break. Liston had nine points during the burst. Liston has gone over 20 points in three of Duke’s games this season.
“Tricia is a very confident player and competes as well as anybody I know,” McCallie said. “She is willing to do whatever it takes. At one point she was blocking a shot inside and then she was out there hitting 3s.”
Xavier could get no closer than 13 in the second half.
“It was a great team game,” McCallie said. “I felt like a lot of different people contributed. Those who started, Elizabeth really set the tone for us. I thought the people came off the bench and really made a difference.”
Jenna Crittendon scored 16 points to lead the Musketeers (2-3).
