On the Hoof: Lyons is a thick safety. In fact, he is built a bit like a small outside linebacker. He will remind fans physically of Oklahoma signee Tony Jefferson.
Needs Improvement: He must continue to work on his backpedal and cover skills. He was a strong safety that played real close to the line of scrimmage last year. He could also add about 10 pounds of muscle mass, which should help him become a real intimidator at the next level.
Most Impressive: He actually has pretty good balls skills for a hard-hitting safety. Lyons possesses the hips to turn and run with receivers, while having a serious affinity for contact. He also has the speed and determination to catch plays from behind or go sideline to sideline.
Conclusion: This highly intelligent defensive back is the kind of player that can get the defensive unit lined up properly and excel on coverage teams. Look for him to be a team leader and a possible three-year starter.
