Scouting Report on Mike Paulusby Mike Farrell - 06/19/2006
Paulus has great size, a very strong arm and can throw in or out of the pocket. He’s deceptively mobile for a big quarterback and has very good athleticism. Still a bit raw as a one-year starter, Paulus looks to be a quick learner and has a very high ceiling. His feet are good, although he’s best suited for a shotgun offense. He makes quick decisions and throws the ball decisively and with authority. He can throw on the run if needed, but he’s at his best in the pocket. Paulus is physically strong enough to wait in the pocket to complete a pass and is strong enough to take punishment. He needs to avoid forcing the football but he has great confidence in his arm and a gunslinger mentality. The level of competition he plays is weak so his ability to raise his game to higher competition is in question. Paulus is a rhythm thrower who can go through his progressions patiently if needed, but he prefers to lock and zip at this stage. His size and arm along with adequate athleticism give him as much upside as some of the quarterbacks ranked higher.
