Scouting Report on Derrick Stephens

by Mike Farrell - 06/20/2006
Stephens is a read and react linebacker with good pursuit speed and a physical nature. He takes on blockers well and plays off them to stay in position to make the tackle. Stephens is good at recognizing the screen pass and closes fast on running backs. He’s good in coverage, especially zone where he has a knack for reading the quarterback’s eyes. Stephens is an effective blitzer and disguises well. He can overcommit at times and get out of position and he has trouble taking on bigger blockers, but he doesn’t shy away from contact and hustles. Stephens would be a great fit in a 3-4 defense with his long frame, ability to cover and his smarts. He takes good angles for the most part and is a sure tackler. Stephens has the size and speed to cover tight ends although he needs to add strength and bulk. Stephens projects as a strongside linebacker in college.
