ELON, N.C. (AP)—Mike Quinn threw for three touchdowns and B.J. Bennett scored three times as Elon rebounded from a season-opening drubbing to rout West Virginia Wesleyan 49-7 Saturday.
Quinn completed 29 of 39 passes for 278 yards as the Phoenix (1-1) responded after losing 70-0 at Georgia Tech last week. It was the opener for the Bobcats under new coach George Shehl.
After the teams traded early scores, Quinn hit Bennett for a 3-yard TD and followed with a 20-yarder to Andre Davis for a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Then Karl Bostick scored on a 1-yard run and Bennett ran for his second score to make it 35-7 at halftime.
The Phoenix piled up 31 first downs and 538 yards. Tracey Coppedge ran for 105 yards and scored the final TD late in the third quarter.
Lavaugh Hughes had 101 yards receiving, including a 35-yard TD for WVW.
