Hendrickson’s 15-yard scoring pass in to Tyrhe Ivery brought North Dakota within 49-41 with 6:17 remaining. UND got the ball back with 1:52 left, but came up a half-yard short on a fourth down pass play at its 38-yard line, and San Diego State ran out the clock.
Katz completed 8 of 11 passes for 195 yards in the first half, throwing TD strikes to Brice Butler (44 yards), Colin Lockett (37 yards) and Gavin Escobar (20 yards) as the Aztecs built a 35-20 halftime lead.
Escobar finished with five receptions for 117 yards.
The temperature at kickoff was 97 degrees, the hottest for a San Diego State home game since Sept. 8, 1984, when it was 93 for a contest against UCLA.
