Jacksonville defeats Charleston Southern 31-10

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—Jordan Dewhirst scored two touchdowns and Jacksonville scored 28 points in the second half to take down Charleston Southern 31-10

Jacksonville (1-1) jumped ahead 10-0 when Dewhirst returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter.

Charleston Southern (0-2) cut the deficit to 24-10 late in the fourth quarter behind a 17-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Derek Hatcher. However, Dewhirst returned the ensuing onside kick 44 yards for a touchdown to put the game away.

The Dolphins defense stifled Charleston Southern all afternoon, recording four sacks, five quarterback hurries, 12 tackles for loss and an interception.

The loss marked Charleston Southern’s 14th straight loss dating back to last season.

Nathan Perera led Charleston Southern with 134 yards on 10 catches, but the Bucs struggled to move the ball on the ground (2.2 yards per carry) and only converted 5 of 17 third-down attempts.
