Rhode Island hangs on to beat Villanova 17-14

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP)—Jarrod Williams returned an interception 33 yards for a touchdown and Willie McGinnis blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone as Rhode Island held on to defeat Villanova 17-14 in Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday.

The Rams (4-5, 3-3) grabbed a 7-0 lead with a little over a minute remaining in the opening quarter following Williams’ interception return.

Following a scoreless second quarter, the Wildcats (6-3, 4-2) tied the score at 7-7 after a 3-yard touchdown run by Angelo Babbaro with 7:53 left in the third.

Louis Feinstein kicked a 19-yard field goal with 3:43 left in the game to give the Rams a 10-7 lead.

Rhode Island increased its lead to 17-7 after McGinnis recovered his own blocked punt with 2:19 left in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats added a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chris Whitney to Norman White with 1:43 left on the clock.
